Excavation of 70,000 tonnes of soil

Hotel Scandic Spectrum opened in June 2022 at Kalvebod Brygge in Copenhagen. As part of the Pihl consortium, we were the leading party for all construction works, including excavation, foundation work and groundwater lowering.
We were responsible for the entire excavation site, including all foundation, earthworks, sewerage and drainage work. Among other tasks, we vibrated 4,500 m² of sheet piling into place, installed in a diaphragm wall. We anchored the building with 170 anchors and excavated 40,000 m³ of soil, equivalent to 70,000 tonnes.
Additionally, we installed the capillary break layer in the excavation pit and placed a base layer around the excavation site.

Did you know?

To keep the groundwater level low during excavation and concrete work, we pumped an average of 225 m³/hour around the clock for 12 months.

Groundwater lowering played a major role

Our groundwater lowering department carried out a highly complex task, as a large meltwater reservoir known as RÃ¥dhusdal was located beneath the site. Therefore, we also performed bentonite injection into the ground to prevent our work from causing contamination.

The hotel was completed in summer 2022. As part of the Pihl consortium, we managed our share of the planning, design and project management. LM Byg constructed the raw structure, which primarily consists of concrete structures cast in situ, while Pihl & Søn oversaw the façade works, installations and interior finishing.
