Building development, access roads and infrastructure

At DSB’s workshop and maintenance facility in Næstved, we are acting as a subcontractor for the general contractor MT Højgaard, including work on access roads, building development and infrastructure.

We have been working on the site, which covers 691,900 m², since October 2022. This major project includes the construction of workshop buildings and a wheel-turning facility. We have been responsible for the entire site setup and all demolition work. We are performing earthworks, drainage, utility and paving works, as well as constructing work platforms along the tracks, lighting, landscaping and security fencing.

Our rail department is building 5 km of ballasted track and 1,340 m of track inside the buildings. Overhead power lines are being installed for all outdoor tracks and locally within the workshop building, including an indoor interlocking system. As part of the contract, we are laying a total of 19,000 tonnes of ballast, 25 km of cable ducts, 2 km of cable trenches and 164 cable wells.

Sustainable initiatives

For the works in Næstved, we have also implemented sustainable initiatives. One key sustainability measure is that we have been extracting gravel for the project internally on site. This eliminates the need for approximately 75,000 m³ of gravel to be transported from an external gravel pit, as well as avoiding the removal of 75,000 m³ of subsoil for external disposal.

DGNB Gold-certified train workshop

This is the world’s first DGNB Gold-certified train workshop, which means that we have integrated more sustainable and environmentally friendly solutions into the project to reduce the environmental impact of the workshop operations.
For the works in Copenhagen, for example, we have sieved and reused ballast for the 12 km of tracks. We achieved this by using our own specially built sorting facility, which can crush ballast and produce a recycled material that we can use instead.
